Work began this month restoring the Burlington Passenger Car 6117. Many corroded and rusted sections of the car were cut out and new sheet metal patches welded in place. Also, large sheet metal patches were formed and installed on the upper vertical section of the car to cover the badly rusted and corroded lightweight sheet metal over the air duct between the upper and lower curved roof sections.
Once all sheet metal was installed on the upper vertical section, the entire upper and lower curved roof sections were primed completely, and will be finish coated early in July 2026.
Work also began in replacing broken windows and repairing or replacing damaged or broken window attachment strips. This work will continue in July with completion hopefully by the end of July or mid-August 2026. Once the broken glass is replaced and window strips are repaired or replaced, priming and final coating of the lower vertical sections will begin.
Other repairs ongoing at this time include the repair of the entryway at the end of the passenger car that is exposed to public view. A door or other mechanism will be fabricated to close off the entry into the car from the public. We plan to also prime and paint the entire end of the car that is visible to the public around this entryway.
